#SDG ACTION ZONE 2022

WE ARE RAPIDLY APPROACHING A TIPPING POINT WHERE, EVEN WITH IMMEDIATE ACTION, RECOVERY OF OUR ICE CAPS (FOR EXAMPLE) MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE

Since FLOP26 in 2021, the world has moved backwards, with Russia invading Ukraine, highlighting the folly of reliance on importation of cheap fossil fuels, that are in reality extremely expensive when compared to wind or solar energy. So progress or sorts, in the empiric actions of a kleptocrat; Vladimir Putin. A climate and war criminal, compared by many to Adolf Hitler. Who, effectively kicked off the UN with his world domination plans.

A lesson perhaps, to would be aggressors in economics and blood-red conflict.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In the end, it pays to play fair. Every country should be energy self-sufficient, so as not to be blackmailed or fiscally bullied.

There have been very few real advances in the COPs, despite proven renewable solutions that vie with fossil fuel investors and dinosaur policies. The problem being local politicians in the chain who profit from allowing the world to warm in proportion to their expanding bank balances. Hence, the FLOPs. Where the true colours of the aberrant participants are hoisted as delaying tactics - a lack of action - excuses and convenient myopia concerning the hungry, energy poor and pollution.

As a Champion and Ally of the SDG transition, the Cleaner Ocean Foundation (COF), and Climate Change Trust (CCT), is/are registered for this event, hoping to learn from the gathering of esteemed speakers of progress, or plans for action - all hands to the pumps!

COF is helping to raise awareness of these issues via creative campaigns, targeting a younger audience, who in turn may influence their voting guardians. COF in entirely independent of the UN, though equally dedicated to the SDG cause, with determined persistence since inception.

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Over the course of three days during the UN General Assembly, the SDG Action Zone brings together the highest levels of UN leadership, activists, government officials, business leaders, change-makers and disruptors in a virtual collaborative space – to highlight the ecosystem-wide solutions, plans, and investments needed to positively impact people’s lives and the future of our fragile planet earth.

THE AIM

With the fierce urgency of the now, we have no choice but to all step up to the most ambitious of global agendas. By amplifying voices, convening thought leaders, connecting changemakers, and calling on all participants to leverage their own sphere of influence, the SDG Action Zone provides everyone with the opportunity to cultivate the community and momentum needed to transform this moment of global upheaval into one of movement-building for people and the planet.

In the UK, Jacob Rees-Mogg appears to have seen the light. Having finally divested themselves of the Clown of Downing Street, Prime Minister Liz Truss is grappling with the ashes of the British economy.

SEPTEMBER 21 2022 - BRINGING THE UN TO THE WORLD AND THE WORLD TO THE UN

From 21 to 23 September 2022, the SDG Action Zone will take place for its fourth year during the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly (UNGA). Building on the success of previous editions, it promises to be the collaborative ‘counterbalance’ to read speeches and scripted programs, championing the activists and the allies accelerating progress towards the SDGs, through candid, honest and powerful conversations. The three-day virtual Action Zone will feature an ambitious array of speakers: from grassroots changemakers, to business leaders, government representatives, and the highest levels of UN leadership – bringing together diverse voices not often given a platform to meaningfully engage and collaborate during UNGA.

The countdown to 2030 is on, and there is truly no time left for empty rhetorical promises unsupported by transformative, sustainable action. For this reason, this year’s Action Zone will spotlight the people “doing” and “demanding”, the “champions” and “allies” of sustainable development from around the world.

INJUSTICE SDG 16 - JUSTICE BEGINS AT HOME

Despite the Sustainability Development Goals, there are serious injustices all over the world, the most abominable of which are in civilised countries that purport to abide by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Many signatories, simply sidestep their responsibilities, by not providing an effective remedy - such as removing funding for legal challenges. So disarming their citizens.

FINANCE - THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL - FOOL'S GOLD

Many of the G20 cowboys are steeped in debt from failing economies. No more so that the USA & UK, $Trillions of dollars, and the UK, £2.4 trillion pounds in the red - living above their means.

Superheated economies based on continuous growth, from foolish borrowing could see extinction on an unprecedented scale. The leaders causing this will be long gone, dead and buried. Leaving the youth of the next twenty, fifty or 100 years, to pick up the pieces.

Our stakeholders are more than willing to pump $Billions into weapons, but almost nothing into cleaning up the mess they are making as the excrement of their policies. They would rather turn a blind eye - until those they are dumping on are able to make enough political noise to force their tormentors to do the right thing. In politics, it's all about the money.

GLOBAL WARMING

As we near the tipping point from which there is no return, the population is still growing and we are still driving diesel and petrol vehicles that emit carcinogenic fumes and heat the planet. Why? The Nazis used exhaust fumes to gas people, the G7 are doing much the same by not accelerating the change to electric vehicles - only on a larger scale. To cure the present lack of infrastructure we need green energy storage, using batteries or hydrogen and fuel cells. Hence, large scale electrolysis and storage systems.

TOXIC OCEAN PLASTIC

Potentially more dangerous in terms of ocean conservation and long term food security, plastic, in its many forms is invading marine life, to include seabirds, fish and marine mammals. Some shellfish beds are already too dangerous to use for human consumption.

Human health is at risk from carcinogens, with men potentially becoming sterile, like some whales. Mothers too are at risk from seafood toxins, and their babies.

THE CARIBBEAN SARGASSUM CRISIS

Not just the Caribbean, but also the Gulf of Mexico. Sargassum has now reached crisis status as climate change accelerates warming of the oceans. When stranded in coastal areas, the sargassum itself dies, and many of the negative impacts originate with its decay. Given the scale and extent of the negative impacts these influx events may be characterized as a recurring hazard. The unprecedented scale of the Sargassum influxes also led to declaration of emergency conditions in several Caribbean countries e.g. Tobago in 2015, Barbados in 2018, and Mexico in 2019. As with plastic, the world's leaders appear to want a free lunch. Nobody is stepping up to the lectern to put their money where their mouths are. Beach cleaning is hardly the answer, barely making a dent in the emergency situations.
